The
AIDS Housing
Crisis
Housing
is the #1 unmet need of people with HIV/AIDS in SF. There are over
18,000 HIV+ people in SF, 13,000 of whom have disabling HIV/AIDS. Each
year an additional 700 people slip into disability and 400 PWA's die.
San Francisco has
only been able to create around 1,000 housing slots
for an estimated 10,000 households with disabling
HIV/AIDS in
need of help. The rest of us are left to struggle to with an average
Social Security Disability Income payment of approximately $950 per
month. Housing programs like Housing
Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) have been cut. So while
need is growing, the amount of help is being reduced.
Adding fuel to the fire is that fact
that people with AIDS have been targeted for speculative evictions in
pursuit of TIC condo conversion. In 2004, 65% of all
of these evictions were targeting people with AIDS, seniors and other
disabled households. 25% of all these evictions were
occuring in District 8 – the Castro. Imagine trying to find another
place to live when you live on $850 per month. Who would want to rent
to us? Who would want to be our roommate?
It is in this context that AIDS Housing
Alliance/SF was born.
AIDS
Housing Alliance/SF believes in a world where all
people have a safe, decent, and affordable home. Toward this vision, we
prevent homelessness for people with HIV/AIDS by protecting the housing
we already have, providing resources to help secure new housing,
and promoting public policy to increase housing opportunities for all.
We are a strong, independent and
authentic voice for the housing needs of people with HIV/AIDS.
