Fighting for Your Rights
Housing is the #1 unmet need of people with
AIDS. This is not an accident. There is a reason why 60-75% of the
members we see each month are homeless. We are perhaps the single
largest group of people targeted for eviction by TIC speculators. We
don't have enough income to find a new place to live. Not enough
housing is being built that is affordable to people who make under
$1000 per month. What little that is available hasn't been effectively
marketed to our communities.
Since
housing is our #1 unmet need, it needs to be our #1 political need. We
need to make sure that we are the ones at the table, making the
decisions that affect our lives. We cannot trust other organizations
that are not run by disabled people with AIDS to stand up for justice
and for our needs. It is not in the nature of social service
organizations to do so. They are too restricted by funding needs and
will only advocate for increased funding for their specific programs.
This is the nature of things.
YES on H provides tenants with
relocation benefits for no-fault evictions. Landlords will be required
to pay each tenant $4,500 for evictions like Owner Move In, Demolition,
Capital Improvements or Substantial Rehabilitation. Plus, tenants
living with children or who are senior or disabled will get an
additional $3,000. This will help ease the pain of evictions and help
tenants find new housing.
YES on H will stop evictions. Many
landlords give “bluff” eviction notices which they have no intention of
following up on. They’ll give an owner move in eviction notice, for
example, even if they have no intent of moving in, hoping that tenants
will just leave and then the landlord can re-rent the apartment for
more rent. Prop H requires landlords to pay half of the relocation
benefits with the eviction notice, Since there’s an average of 2
tenants per apartment, it will cost over $5,000 to issue most eviction
notices. Prop H will make it too costly to issue these
bluff notices.
